The "Peredvizhniki and Old European Masters" lecture will be held at the Tretyakov Gallery on January 18

The event takes place as part of the cultural and educational program for one of the central exhibition projects of the year — "Peredvizhniki" (Itinerants).

The lecture is dedicated to the global changes in the world history of art, which took place in the second half of the XIX century:

such previously unquestioned respected masters as Raphael fade into the background, and their place is taken by artists of the XVII century Spanish school (Velasquez, Hals, etc.). The Peredvizhniki became an outstanding and integral part of these transformations in the art world, reinterpreting the lessons of eminent masters and creating a unique pictorial language on their basis. Rembrandt, Murillo and Velasquez inspired new masterpieces by such Russian artists as Repin, Perov, Yaroshenko, Maximov, Kramskoy and Surikov. It is commonly believed that it is the artists of the Peredvizhniki are the cornerstone Russian culture phenomenon of that era.

The "Peredvizhniki and Old European Masters" lecture will be given by senior lecturer of the School of Historical Sciences of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, academic director of the Bachelor’s program "History of Art" Elena Sharnova.

Please be advised that the lecture will be held on January 18 at 19:00 in the building on Kadashovskaya Embankment, and the "Peredvizhniki" exhibition is available for visitors until April 6, 2025. Tickets for both events are available on the Tretyakov Gallery website.
