Feast
Maksim Bolgov | Russia
"The Feast reveals far more than a simple domestic scene of a family dinner — it unfolds as a deeply symbolic narrative. At its center lies the embodiment of the Nordic spirit of a woman — reserved and resilient, expressed through her humble silence and spiritual connection to God.

Despite the harsh conditions of life in the North, the peasant woman has not lost faith in a brighter future. She neither longs for a different fate nor complains about her lot; instead, she remains devoted to her homeland and her roots.

A discerning viewer will notice the symbolism in the still life that gives the painting its title: a cast-iron pot, a modest meal — likely potatoes and onions; two spoons — one old, the other freshly carved; and two women — mother and daughter, guardians of the hearth. These elements suggest that they are the only inhabitants of the home and that no one else is expected at the table.

There is no man in the house — all responsibilities have fallen on the women’s shoulders. Where is he, the husband and father? Missing? Dead? Perhaps away at the front? What is the girl praying for? Is she asking for something, or perhaps giving thanks for what she has? Does she believe in happiness? Or, despite all hardship, does she still find joy in life?

In the cold northern land, there is always something that brings warmth — not just the Russian stove, but the Russian soul".
