THE MOVEMENT OF THE UNIVERSE 2
JEANCY TANZEY | DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
This work emerged from my observations of a teosinte leaf. Its veins twist, intertwine, and form an endless dynamic network. Within that movement, I saw a dance.

Two figures dance across the canvas. A musician playing the traditional ngoma drum establishes the rhythm, while additional dancing silhouettes appear among the white, leaf-like lines. Traditional instruments such as the kora, lokole, kossa, and sanza are not physically depicted, yet their presence resonates throughout the composition. The viewer may not see them, but can almost hear them, because dance cannot exist without music.

In Africa, dance is far more than a sequence of beautiful movements — it is a complete language of the body. Rather than explaining emotions through words, we experience and communicate them through movement, sharing pure energy with others. Over time, this language has become part of the cultural heritage of humanity. Few people realize that twerking, now practiced worldwide, traces some of its roots to traditional dances such as Congolese ndombolo and Ivorian mapouka. In this way, African movement traditions have long contributed to global culture.

I chose the tree as the central symbol of this work: different leaves, yet one branch and one common root. We may be profoundly different from one another, but we remain deeply connected. Dance, for me, is precisely that universal bond — a language that unites us beyond words.
